I just read an article from ‘Clean up Australia’.  http://cleanupaustralia.wordpress.com

It took me back to when I was a kid and how carefree the world seem to be.  It reminded me of  ’Bottle Collecting’ to get the 5¢ refund. A good days work would see at least $2.00 – $2.50 in your pocket. And it was a great way to occupy a Saturday morning.

In the Clean up Australia Article, it was suggested that companies resume the Container Refunds that were so successful.

I would like to go one further and back charge any company that uses excessive packaging.
Some things are required by legislation to be tamper proof or damage proof. (chemicals, Cleaning fluids, etc.) But there are some companies that are creating a massive environmental stuff ups.

Take McDonalds for instance. If you buy a medium meal deal at the drive through, you are given:-

  • A paper bag
  • An individual box for your burger
  • A cardboard sleave for your fries
  • A wax coated cup for your drink.
  • A ‘grab’ of serviettes
  • Any promotional crap they have
  • And a plastic Straw.

These are the types of companies that are destroying the environment and should be made to pay a levy for excessive use of packaging.
That levy should then be reduced as the packaging is reduced. Half of the packaging would dissapear straight away!

Everybody wants to Save Electricity! Well here are a few ways that are proven winners that don’t take much effort at all.

The first one is Home Heating.
Heating your home or cooling your home is a very costly venture. There are ways to save electricity that don’t really affect the indoor comfort your trying to achieve.

  1. Seal your windows and doors. Draughts will reduce the benefit of heating your home.
  2. Curtains will help if they are a heavy material. Blinds are almost useless inles they close completely and cover the whole glass area of the window.
  3. Reduce the temperature of your heater a few degrees. Every degree you turn up your heater adds 10% extra to the running cost.
  4. Take advantage of the free ceiling insulation offer by the Australian Government. You could save up to 25% on your heating and cooling.
  5. If you have kids, educate them to switch of lights and chargers. Tell them you’ll share half the savings with them and see an instant result.
  6. Turn off ALL appliances at the power outlet. Again you can save around 10% off your electricity bill.
  7. Look at alternate ways to heat your water. When that water heater dies, take advantage of the water heater rebate. You will save Thousands of Dollars on the new installation.
